Student Lending Increased

Wednesday 13th June 2007

The Student Loans Company has released figures this week showing that they have lent students from the UK a whopping £376.9 million to pay their annual tuition fees for the academic year 2006/7. A further £9.7 million was lent to students from other regions of the European Union.

289,229 English students started UK University courses this year and along with the loans to cover tuition fees a further £2.6 billion was lent to UK students to cover maintenance costs.

The system has changed this year with students starting new courses forced to pay £3,000 each year for tuition fees where previously the figure was set at £1,175. These charges do not need to be paid up front however as before and can be covered by a loan and repaid upon receiving employment after graduation.

Although the amount of money lent out by The Student Loans Company has risen this year they have stated that it is impossible to make any useful analysis of the figures due to the new changes in place.
