The Swimming Pond Concept
The ‘swimming zone’ is separated from the planted area or the ‘regeneration zone’ by an internal wall that terminates around 20cm below the surface of the pond allowing free movement of water between the two zones and ensuring the swimming area is kept free of vegetation. Despite the divide, one still feels surrounded and immersed in plants, while swimming in uninterrupted water. Each zone is roughly equal in size.
No Chemicals
In place of chemicals, the aim of the regeneration zone is to utilize plants as a living filtration system which absorbs nutrients to clear and purify the water and maintain a natural swimming environment. Water is circulated by a concealed pump, from the swimming area, through the regeneration zone and back into the swimming area.
Wildlife
With the loss of so many natural ponds over recent times, the swimming pond can play a vital role in providing a wildlife habitat. It will quickly become a diverse habitat for animals such as frogs, toads and newts, although any concerns about swimming with amphibians should be put to one side as they will have left the pond by the time the water warms up sufficiently for swimming.
To observe dragonflies darting above the surface of the water and watch wild birds coming to the waters edge to drink and bathe is a sheer delight. At night, bats will soon discover a rich source of food in the insects which live around the swimming pond.
Cost
Cost can be similar to that of a conventional swimming pool but ultimately will depend on specification. As a general guide swimming ponds work out between £300 - £400 per square metre.
